WORKS FINE

Pros: good build quality
Cons: doesn't allow the use of non-lithium battery packs

Once you know how to use this, it works great. It's designed to hold the GPS in, and it does it effectively. You will need the screw that came with it (the knobby button that you screw in the top back) for it to work. No problems, I highly recommend it.

OCTAGON BUTTON VS. SMALL BUTTON WITH THIS CRADLE

Pros: nice cradle
Cons: does not come with 'octagon button with screw'

Referring to my previous review... "ED" left a note below my previous review, and I'm here to clarify and respond... Ed, I know that the Rino530's come with a small button, but you should know that the small button DOES NOT work with this cradle. I have this cradle and also ordered one for my dad and i promise that the small button DOES NOT hold the Rino 530 securely in this cradle. The larger "Octagon Button with Screw" (Item #: RAP277GA8) is the only button that will hold the GPS Unit securely in this cradle. I use GPS's as a primary tool for my work (everyday) and have both the Rino 130 GPS and Cradle and the Rino 530HCx GPS and Cradle and the small button absolutely does not hold the 530 securely in this cradle. See, I have both of them in my hands right now and the small button does not hold the 530 in this cradle without the octagon button w/ screw that came with the Rino 1xx series cradle. I mean, look at the size of the hole/latch at the top of this cradle, and you will see that it is much bigger (the size of the larger Octagon Button w/ screw) than the small standard button that comes with the 530 gps unit. I just tried it...the small button does not work with this cradle, well, at least with mine, and i doubt that everyone elses' is different that mine. I travel the state of Colorado and use my Rino's every day to help me sign property boundaries on close to 550,000 acres all across CO, so I'm constantly field testing these products to make my job more efficient. Trust me, the octagon button with screw is the only way I am able to get my Rino 530HCx to stay secured in this cradle. Item RAP277GA8 is needed to keep the Rino 530HCx secure in this cradle. I just proved it to myself again right here in front of my eyes, so....

I FOUND THE SOLUTION...

Pros: works great when used with the 'octagon button'
Cons: this cradle does not include the 'octagon button'

To update everyone from my previous review... The 'Ram Mount OCTAGON BUTTON from Rino 1xx Series cradle' WILL work with this cradle for the Rino 530 HCx. I also have a Rino 130 GPS and have the cradle for it. The Rino 1xx Series cradle comes with the 'Octagon Button', but the Rino 5xx Series cradle (this cradle) does not come with any button. MY Rino 530HCx stays secured in this cradle with the 'Octagon Button'... I hope this helps...well it for sure will...because i already have 1 octagon button that works with both this cradle and the cradle for my Rino 130, but when i ordered this cradle for my dad's Rino 530HCx unit, it did not come with any button and I could not remember how I had one so that i could get one for him. I actually ordered 5 of them in case i lose any and to give a few to my dad. YAY!! PROBLEM SOLVED!!

[Ed. note: Please note that the Garmin Rino 5xxHCx units all come with the small belt clip button that this cradle, RAM-HOL-GA20U, uses to hold the unit. You should not use the Rino 1xx series button, it is not the correct button. The correct button is Garmin part number 145-00500-00 that we do have available for sale on GPSCITY.com. This is included with the Rino from the factory, it is required for use. Please refer to GPSCITY.com's video on the RAM-HOL-GA20U for more information. ]

WHERE'S THE LARGER SIZED BUTTON?

Pros: none, without the large screw-in button
Cons: gps is not secured into cradle w/o large button

When I ordered this item for my Garmin 530HCx handheld GPS 2 years ago, and the cradle also came with a screw-in, large button (like the buttons for the belt clips that screw into the back of the GPS unit, except larger to fit in the cradle...you can see the hole and spot for the button to fit) and it all works great. Then 1 year later (last year, 2009) I ordered the mount and cradle for my dad's work Rino 530HCx and the cradle DID NOT come with any type of screw-in button, and I cannot figure out why gpscity.com or Ram Mounts would not include the button with the cradle, as that is the only way the gps unit will stay secured in the cradle. I have also searched everywhere to purchase the large button separate but cannot find it anywhere, so there my dad is with a product that won't work (fyi...purchased for field use for the CO Div. of Wildlife) after I was hootin n hollerin about how great my gps mount and cradle are and worked...very disappointing. Other than that, MY cradle works great with the large button...a pain to get the gps out of the cradle, but works great when mounted for use in the truck. GPSCITY.COM AND/OR RAM MOUNTS...A MESSAGE TO YOU...INCLUDE THE LARGE SCREW-IN BUTTON WITH THE CRADLE OR MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE SEPARATE OR I WILL TAKE MY STATE BUSINESS ELSEWHERE...PLEASE!!!!!

[Ed. note: Please note that the Garmin Rino 5xxHCx units all come with the small belt clip button that this cradle, RAM-HOL-GA20U, uses to hold the unit. TOP QUALITY MOUNT

Pros: tough, excellent quality
Cons: can't use it with the alkaline battery pack

As usual, RAM makes an excellent product that is tough and fits my Rino 530hcx GPS like a glove. However, it doesn't fit the GPS when you use the alkaline battery pack. Not RAM's falult I guess but it would be nice if they would design a cradle that would work with the alkaline battery pack.

A FEW COMMENTS ABOUT THE RAM CRADLE FOR RINO 530

This is the second cradle I've had for Garmin. The first was for the 60CSX and that has worked very well bike touring on a recumbent trike.

The cradle when it arrived latched far too tight on the Rino, this was also true for the 60CSX, bit in this case I had to unscrew the rear mount peg on the Rino to free it from the cradle. I then filed down the lock until it would release reliably.

This cradle has one other flaw, though you could call it a flaw with the Rino instead. It only fits the Rino with the rechargable battery, won't fit the Rino if you use alkaline or AA rechargeable in that battery case for the Rino. This is a big problem if you are touring and don't have access to AC to charge the battery pac. It means I can only use the Rino locally and not on bike touring until I find a solution. I asked RAM and they were not interested.

Otherwise if you can run only with the rechargeable pac the cradle does a good job of holding the Rino. Much better than Garmin's own design.

Walt

RINO 530 CRADLE MOUNT

Very disappointed. Do not recommend. Any alternatives? The plastic cracked around both mounting bolts the first time the cradle was used. The lower screw pulled away thru the lower base mounting hole. It appears Ram Mounts has a manufacturing quality defect. We will now see how good the "Life time Warranty" is.

I agree that it is not a "solid" fit and it does rattle a little, but if you have the "button" screwed onto the back that is supplied with the rhino, the GPS is locked in, it is hard to remove!!!! You others must not have done this. I think this is a great mount other than not being able to attach the charger at the same time. I have had this mounted to my DS650 bomby sport ATV for 2 years and it has not popped out once!!! Figure it out folks.

RINO CRADLE

Why bother with this cradle? The rhino just sits in there with no way to secure it? How about fabricating a locking screw assembly of some sort. WORST CRADLE EVER! Forget about using this on a snowmobile!! Probably great for a big wheels trike.I would rather put my rhino in my pack.

RAM CRADLE FOR THE RINO 530

The rino just sits in the mount with nothing to hold it in place. I have to use an elastic band to hold it in. The inabilitity to attach the charger is also disappointing but the battery holds a charge for quite a long time so not really an issue after all.

BAD DESIGN AND FLIMSY

This mount needs to make use of the tightning screw in back of the GPS to mount securely on to the cradle. This has the GPS just sit in the cradle with slight tension from the knob screw holding inside of the hole at the top of the cradle. The GPS falls out with just a shake. You would need to modify somehow to hold the GPS securely. Dissapointing Also is very flimsy.

The RAM cradle for the RINO 530 is disappointing. When the RINO is snapped into the cradle, it still has about 1/16" to rattle inside the mount, and you can't clip the external power adapter to the back of the unit when in the cradle??!! Altogether sort of useless for anything other than a day trip, and at that I'll need to add some thin foam behind the RINO to keep it from vibrating destructively when on the motorcycle. Not recommended.
