MAGELLAN TAKE HEED

Pros: strength, simple and positive adjustment
Cons: clamp too easily disassebled, no reset hole

The RAM Locking Suction Cup Mount was purchased to replace the original mount for my Magellan 4250 Navigator. The original mount was too complicated to adjust, utilizing two pivot points and two separate wing nuts. The mount was made entirely of plastic, which broke at the vertical pivot. The RAM mount is incredibly strong, being made entirely from marine grade aluminum, with the exception of the GPS cradle which is plastic. The RAM mount utilizes two ball mounts which are both adjusted from a single wing nut making it both easier to adjust and lower profile than the original. The locking suction cup is simple to affix and absolutely secure, but easy to remove when necessary. I have one cautionary note for users, however. The first time I removed the GPS and cradle from the mount I loosened the wing nut, but the metal clamp remained attached (stuck) to the rubber balls. As a result, I inadvertantly removed the wing nut and bolt from the clamp and the nut, two washers, the nut and the spring fell from the mount onto the dash, coming to rest against the windshield very close to a defroster vent. Had they fallen into the vent hole they would have been gone forever. It would be wise for RAM to note the possibility of the rubber ball sticking to the clamp and advising against over-loosening the wing nut. Adding a circlip to the end of the bolt to prevent it's complete removal would be an even better idea. The only other change I would recommend is that RAM include a small hole in the cradle through which to access the reset button on the 4200 series GPS. Acquiring this mount has been an altogether positive experience both from the point of view of service from GPS City and the overall quality of the product.
