MOUNT FOR SPOT SATELLITE GPS MESSENGER

Pros: ideal for my usage
Cons: nothing to date

I purchased this unit to mount my SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger unit in my Piper Cherokee airplane.

I selected an area on the lower left part of the aircraft's windshield to attach the suction cup base. With the flexibility afforded by the two ball joints, I was able to position the unit so it received the GPS signals plus it allowed me to access the power/message buttons to operate the unit and also monitor the indicator lights.

I've "test driven" the unit in my car to see how well the RAM suction cup holds the unit to the windshield and have subjected it to some pretty rough railway crossings and washboard roads. So far the suction cup on the RAM mount has outperformed the "stock" suction cup holder I received with my automobile GPS. The automobile one continually failed to hold the auto GPS to the windshield in spite of the fact the auto GPS is a lot lighter than the SPOT unit.

From those experiments, I am confident the mount will be able to function properly in any turbulence I might encounter while flying.

GOOD SUCTION

Pros: keeps the spot or gps in your view
Cons: somewhat finicky to get set right

I have used these for my SPOT and GPS in my truck and Boat with good results. I was unsure if they would hold tight on logging roads or rough water but I have not had a problem. As long as the windshield is clean it seems to get a good suction and hold tight.

SPOT MOUNT

1. the distance between the suction cup and the holder is such that the total distance from top to bottom makes it difficult to attach to windshields that have any degree of slant to them.

2. There needs to some method to get a better suction to adhear the cup to the window.
