My 12XL is my third GPS. What an improvement over the previous two.
Been using it for the last 10 years around the Globe. Rugged, AA
powered Batteries available anywhere on the planet, deplandable.
Never leave Home without it! Too bad it has been discontinued but
Garmin must move on.

Solid unit. Bought for forestry field work when GPS was still new to consumers. Skeptical at first on accuracy since SA was still on after 15 years of using map and compass to navigate but was a believer in no time. It has been everywhere from +35 degrees Celsius to -45 degrees, to day after day in soaking rain conditions and still going strong. I have a new GPS Map76 which is faster but the 12XL still does the same job.

I've had my Garmin 12XL for 4 years know and I love it. It is on rugged piece of equipment and one I know I can depend on when I need to.
I strongly recommend this unit if you don't need one with WAAS (wide area agmentation system).
My 12XL consistantly gets me with in about 10 meters of a waypoint.

I've been using my 12XL since the model was introduced by Garmin - 10 years? It gives the user a LOT of information in a clear format without cute cartoons. The 12XL has a connector on the back for an external antenna which is an important feature for me since I use mine for trail mapping. The ergonomic design allows for true one-hand (or one thumb) operation. Try that with other models. There are a lot of situations where that's an important consideration. I wouldn't trade my 12XL for anything comparable on the market right now. There have been reports that Garmin intends to drop this model from the lineup but it's still a current listing on their web site. I'd buy another 12XL in a nanosecond...but I don't need to.
