I had the first generation of Foretrex and used it for a number of years. It worked, but the performance was lacking. Not the case with the new 301. Quick to get a signal and holds its signal well under canopy. Even worked indoors! I used it first with the strap extender on the arm of my parka on a ten degree windy day and it worked flawlessly. Garmin has just come out a watch style GPS but at better than twice the price of the 301. Why pay the extra $$$?

Most of the soldiers replied they wanted this type of GPS.
Easy to use, easy to place on gear/person/wpn. Most said it
has exactly what is required without needing to move up to the
next model.

elevation and milage on my dirt bike and most recently
while on a 40-plus mile back packing trip for elevation,
milage & tracks.
