The new Hero3 Black edition is a very nice addition to the
GoPro lineup. I’ve owned the original Hero and several Hero2
cameras. For what I do, the main differences with the
previous versions are the improved low-light performance,
the possibility of using a 1080-60p mode and a better lens
with less distortion. In bright daylight, image quality is
very good but when compared side by side (same mode) with a
Hero2, the Black gives a slightly less saturated image and
the white balance is different, although not necessarily
better or worse than the older camera. I can’t wait to try
slow-motion with the 720-120p mode and try tweaking footage
in post in Protune mode. I still can’t figure out why they
have included 2K and 4K modes at such low frame rates.
Battery life with the LCD back might be a problem as I can’t
get more than about 50 minutes with the LCD on. As with
previous models, there’s no way to use an extra battery AND
the LCD backpack. The original accessories and camera backs
will work with this new model.
I have no use for WiFi or the remote, so for me the premium
paid for the Black over the Silver was only to get better
low-light performance and better optics. Well worth it!
