This is a very good unit after you get it to work. The unit comes with almost no instructions. With the exception of a Quick Start manual... ziltch ! Nothing, so when the normal installation does not work (like in my case) you are in trouble. The Garmin site is no help regarding installation. But when you finally get it to work with various forum help, it seems a pretty good unit.

If you are looking for a Bluetooth GPS that will supply GPS data to your Laptop navigational software, including Mobile PC, this might not be the best choice. You may find yourself frustrated by Bluetooth receiver ncompatability. I wanted to use the 10x with my Toshiba Laptop running MS Vista, using an iOGear Bluetooth receiver dongle. It took me several days and a lengthy call with a determined and friendly Garmin tech assistant to try to get my laptop to find and access the GPS signal. Mobile PC was unable to connect to the GPS with the iOGear bluetooth dongle, however after several Bluetooth receiver software updates I did manage to get MS Streets and Trips and Delorme City Navigator to read the signal and give me a position. I had to buy and install a different receiver dongle, this time a D-Link unit, before the signal from the 10x would work with Mobile PC. Unfortunately, the new dongle would not work with MS Streets and Trips, my favourite program. So either way two out of three programs I like to use would not use the signal. The GPS itself is compact and the battery life is good, but if you are struggling with the setup you will be frustrated by the automatic shutdown feature which turns the unit off after about 10 minutes. That's not a lot of time when you're busy trying to diagnose connection problems, loading drivers and rebooting your laptop. I found myself going frequently in and out of the house to either check on or restart the GPS to see if my latest attempted fix worked. MS Vista does not have the supremely useful Hyperterminal app loaded, although I read it could be downloaded from Microsoft. This is useful if you're trying to figure out if one of your Comm Ports is actually receiving the signal from the 10X, and helps to focus in on the source of the problem. Without it, you can't tell whether you have a GPS problem, a software problem or a Bluetooth receiver problem.

This software could not find the included GPS 10x and so GPS City sent me out another to try. The second one was no different and Garmin was totally useless in their tech support. Don't get me wrong, Garmin is, in my opinion, the best GPS maker out there and I've had two Garmin units prior to this but here, they've dropped the ball. They have not clue how to troubleshoot their own product, yet they sell it anyway. What a shame.
