I bought this unit for its custom maping abilities as well
as the advanced track/route management compared with my
Nuvi 500. I am not sure if the built-in topographic
mapping is really of much use, as it isn't very detailed
and you can download 24k maps for free from the internet.
It does allow the unit to show the terrain in 3D mode which
is very cool, however. (I don't know if that feature will
work with the free, downloadable maps.) The unit is easy
to use and the menus make sense. Everything I've tried to
do with the unit has worked with no frustration (install
maps, save/upload tracks and routes, and make my own custom
maps.) The custom map feature is a cool one, as it allows
you to insert a highly detailed map of a park (for example)
right on top of the built-in map, so all the trials,
service areas, etc. show up and are fully GPS-able within
the unit. You also have the abilty to use satellite
imagery, but I have not used this feature. It runs for
hours and hours on rechargable AA batteries with the screen
on and the backlight at full.

this unit travels well backpacking with me, usefull clip
included, and very tough, i also downloaded some screen
shots from google earth as j-peg and use sthem as a tool,
zooming in with the photo viewer, the topo map is good but
i also had to get the street map seperately, this is
seriously the best unit without a camera (i don't want one)
reccomended for the deep woods hiking and fishing.
ps-still trying to get custom maps to work

The maps that are included are
not routable. You'll read about how you can put it in
driving mode and such but the included maps are not
routable and you'll get an error.
I can't believe I paid this much money for a GPS that
doesn't have maps that are routable.

Bought in April 2011 and have used it for almost a year
regularly for Geocaching. Great to be able to down load
caches and queries as needed.
Like all handhelds, it has it good days and bad days per
satellite coverage but, zero's in all the time. Like the
3d compass capability b/c out in the woods you are never
level.
I have a Colorado but, the touch screen is by far better.
