This unit has great features but is not user friendly. I
am a geologist that has used GPS units professionally for
over 23 years. I bought this unit because of the
advertised mapping capabilities and the availability of
satellite images and map layer capabilities. The other
great feature I thought was the safety aspect with the
optional inSight? transmitter for remote communication. I
found the waypoint aquisition to be the most irritating
feature. Once you name a waypoint that name continues to
be the default. So if you marked the location of
your "Truck", every waypoint is labelled Truck, Truck 1,
Truck 2, Truck 3 etc. This makes my job of sample
identification and data collection tedious because you have
to re-edit every following waypoint. The Mapping software
that comes with the unit looks great but is also very
difficult to figure out. It follows none of the common
conventions for mapping software. For example, I have yet
to figure out how to download a list of waypoints and
export it to other software I use. Potentially this is a
great product but it is more like trying to learn basic GIS
software.
If you are a casual user for hiking or camping forget it.
Professional GIS savvy users may find this GPS to be a very
useful tool.
I would love to use the features that are available in this
system but the interfaces need to be redesigned and tested
by actual potential users. I also have to consider
problems training field workers to use this unit and in my
view that would be too difficult.
The bottom line is, I will be using this GPS as truck
mounted navigation tool using the map database that came
with the unit. But I will be using a more user friendly
GPS for field data collection.
