spot and decided to make the plunge and buy both as a
package. Very happy with the GPS system so far. Great to be
able to download topo maps to screen. Easy to use.
The spot receiver works great with the unit. It is very easy
to set up and use. I can set it on the seat of my car and it
still tracks. I really like the option of sending your own
set of msgs when requesting help or just checking in. I
purchased a 12 volt car adaptor for vehicle travelling. Michael, November 25, 2010 The DeLorme Earth mate PN60W with Spot, is by far the most
user friendly GPS unit that I have ever used. I am a big
fan of Garmin, but this unit is right up there with them. I
especially like the easy to use menu and the working
relationship with the Spot Receiver.
I would recommend this unit to any outdoor enthusiast that
require the use of a GPS unit and would like to keep their
family and friends informed of their activities by way of a
short personalized and real time txt message. This message
takes the guess work out of what type of assistance you
may require or you can just let your family know that you
are having a great time.
Before using the Spot unit for real, practice with it so
that you fully understand the limitations and capabilities
of the units. Juan, November 10, 2010 I was looking for an upgrade to my trusty Garmin 60Csx and I
opted for this unit. What sold it to me was the SPOT locator
and the possibility to send personnelized OK, Help messages
to any group of contacts. I also love the idea that I can
login any geocaches from the field even outside cell
coverage. I'm not a Facebook or Twitter user, but if it
manages as well as the geocaching connection it's doing a
bang-up job.
Since I live in Eastern Canada (Qc) and Garmin's
CityNavigator and TopoCanada v4 coverage is really good, I'm
not to impressed by the Map packs available through Delorme
Topo North America 9 or Delorme's library. We're told that
it should be getting better with time. The maps are
beautifully rendered but I still use my 60Csx for routing
and for any POI's when on the road. The PN-60W has a long
way to go to be as fast as the 60Csx for finding POI's,
routing and finding adresses. It took half an hour for a
rerouting calculation with the PN-60W when it tooks seconds
for the 60 Csx.
On a another note, there is no better GPS when it comes to
power management, this baby can run for days thanks to it's
self adjusting ambient backlighted screen. My first big let
down the power cable is a special connector that slides in
the back of the unit. Don't get me wrong, it looks very
rugged and wont come off like those mini-usb connector you
find on cell phones, digital cameras and other GPS (garmin).
But the fact that it isn't a mini-USB power cable makes it
annoying to carry that specific cable everywhere. With my
60CSX I could always really on a extra mini-USB cable lying
in the office. Not with this GPS, you need to buy extras.
The biggest mistake with this GPS is the fact that the
buttons aren't backlited. It has a great screen at night but
what can you do if you don't know where the buttons are ?!
Hope the fix that with the next generetion.
Despite those flaws, the SPOT integration makes it the GPS
for outdoor enthousiast who want to keep in contact with
their loved ones. Extreme goecachers are also going to love
the instant cache login from anywhere on the globe.
