I needed to find a good place to mount a VHF antenna on my
deck boat (which by the way, is pretty much void of a “good”
place!). I frequent inland waters (lakes mostly) but
sometimes adventure out in major waters (rivers & bays), so
I don’t need or use a VHF radio all the time. I wanted to
have the antenna easily removable so I could install it
easily when I need it and not have it permanently mounted.
I really like RAM mount products and use one of their mounts
for my chartplotter/sonar unit on top of my dash at the helm
and they provided a great solution for my antenna mounting
challenge. Antennas should be mounted as high as possible
for best performance. That meant installing the antenna on
my bimini top, which is the highest point on my boat. This
mount offered the most flexibility in where to put it AND
adjustment to angle it for the best possible position. It
also lets me easily lower or remove the antenna as required.
GPS City also is the only place I found that includes
everything you need to successfully mount this unit to the
rail “IN ONE PART NUMBER”!!!! (Kudos GPS City!!!). RAM and
most other suppliers make you order the parts separately
(the threaded piece that screws on to the antenna base, the
bracket that attaches the antenna to the 1 ½” ball, and
finally the bracket that attaches these parts to a rail.) I
have a 3ft stainless steel antenna attached to a 4 ft mast
extension that attaches to this Ram mount assembly and I
couldn’t be happier. The 1 ½” rubber ball mount is more
than robust to keep the antenna upright and the rail mount
bracket easily handles my 7/8” diameter rail (the rail
bracket accommodates ¾” to 1” rails). Perfect for what I
needed. Excellent product, excellent supplier!
