There seems to be some confusion amongst other folks who
have reviewed this product.
You CAN charge devices without it being connected to a PC.
If you just want an independent, powered USB hub this will
work as such. You do NOT need to connect it to a PC.
The main purpose of the Tough-Hub is to power your non-PC
connected devices. Its secondary purpose is to connect
devices to a PC. The unit also comes with an ignition-
sensing connection (you must be technically saavy enough to
hook it up to an ignition source). The device has a built-in
timer. When you turn off the car, it will continue to charge
devices for 15 minutes. The timer is adjustable (you need to
take it apart to make adjustments - after all this is a
rugged device and not built for frequent tinkering).
Ive never had a problem with it charging anything. If
someone else is, that can be from a variety of factors
including issues with their cars battery or vehicle
charging system. Most new vehicles these days come with a
car battery from the factory that just barely meets the
amperage requirement of that vehicle with all the gizmos you
ordered with the car. Theyre typically not designed to
handle much more without draining the battery (which,
depending on your driving habits you may or may not ever
notice).
When you install the device, make sure you wire it
correctly. The main power plug needs to be connected
directly to your cars battery (always on power), and there
are 2 different ground leads. If you are not familiar with
installing car stereo equipment or other electrical
equipment in a vehicle, hire someone qualified to install
this for you.
If you dont install the supplied power connector properly,
and the ignition sense properly, youre going to have one of
two problems. Either you will drain your cars battery, or
youll be disappointed with the performance of this device
as it draws power from your PC (which wont be enough to
power many devices for long via the Hub).
To reiterate, proper installation is key! If youve got that
down, youll be pleased. If not, youll be miserable and
disappointed (not the Tough-Hubs fault)!

Well built - will not full charge iPhone or iPad

This item would get an excellent review if I was looking at
installing a PC in my vehicle for charging. All I was trying
to accomplish was provide USB charging to various
electronics in the car without using a cigarette lighter
adapter. This unit will accomplish charging but requires a
PC to do so. The PC has to be plugged in to the "USB IN"
port for any "USB OUT" to charge the various devices. Not
sure why this is the case but it defeats the purpose of a
powered USB hub. This is not mentioned anywhere in the
instructions. USB in is not shown in the picture either.
Hook up however is very simple even tough the instructions
is less than half a page of a letter size document.
I thought the first unit I received was defective because it
did not charge without a PC either.
GPS City's return process for exchange was very easy, fast
and hassle free. Unfortunately, the second unit behaved the
same way. That is just the way it is designed. I would give
this item a five stars if it allowed to configure the device
via simple switch (Position 1 = PC required for charging or
Position 2 = Unit will charge usb devices without a PC being
present.)

Performs as desired. RAM makes quality mounts and this
accessory is of the normal quality produced by them. It is
rugged, easy to mount and provides excellent grounding. Also
handy is the timed power option for accessory power.
