I own several Garmin Nuvi 1490t's and use them for my auto,
motorcycle, kayaking, canoeing , and boating. The RAM
waterproof AquaBox works well for these applications.
GPSCity bundled the Aquabox with the correct amount of foam
for my unit, and I was able to choose a mount type that
satisfied my specific requirements. RAM makes so many mount
types, you should have no trouble finding something that
works for you.
Nuvi's 1490 internal battery has limited runtime so a day
long water outing will leave you without GPS. I also
purchased a Gilsson bare wire power adapter to attach to a
small 12vdc battery. The Aquabox comes with no holes so you
have to punch out or drill one near the mount plate on back
of the box (the Aquabox is designed for you to make openings
here.
On my motorcycle, the Aquabox works well. Unfortunately it's
size presents an asthetic trade-off on my bike but it does
keep the GPS dry.
Heat is a concern with the Aquabox when kayaking or
canoeing. The box is black, and since air doesn't get
inside, it acts like a small oven for my GPS electronics.
While I've had no issues, I make a point to keep it covered
with a small white towel to reflect heat - I do the same for
my camera as well.
The waterproof membrane does allow use of the GPS
touchscreen but you will find that it's sensitivity is
reduced. It's a trade off between NO control, and a good
amount of control through the membrane. Unless someone
provides a thinner membrane, you aren't going to have much
choice if you want a waterproof housing. The membrane also
supports the GPS unit so too thin might jeopardize the
safety of your GPS. In a nutshell, I believe the Aquabox is
provides enough control without having to open the unit to
adjust the GPS.
Power off? If you want to turn off your Nuvi while it's in
the Aquabox, you have 2 options - drop the power if it's
supplied externally, or open the Aquabox and turn it off.
The power button is located at the top of the unit, and
there is no way to reach it once the Aquabox is closed.
Unless RAM wants to add an o-ring sealed button option and
you're handy with a drill - this isn't going to be an option
for you. Other GPS units may be different.
Audio? The Aquabox renders your GPS audio pretty much
useless you have an external speaker you can use. My Nuvi
does not have this option. In my case, I have bluetooth on
my GPS but again - using it is useless since the GPS
microphone and speaker are tucked inside the Aquabox. Not
an issue for me but noteworthy to comment on.
Purchasing from GPSCity was a breeze. I picked the Aquabox,
and was given a handful of mount options to choose from.
Shipping was darned fast with emails providing status during
the process.
Originally, I purchased 1 Aquabox as a test. I plan to
purchase additional units (with appropriate mounts) for my
sailboat, kayaks, canoes, and motorcycles. Of course I could
just swap one box by removing it from the RAM mount each
time but I prefer the convenience of opening the Aquabox,
attaching the power cable, and starting my day.

Unit is what's pictured. Comes with the box enclosure, a
ball to secure to the back of the box, the arm, and another
ball to mount somewhere else. I bought this along with the
RAM Ball mount (1.25 pitch male thread ball) so I could
mount it in the unused mirror hole. They worked well
together on my 08 Kawasaki Ninja, providing a very stable
mount. There are also several layers of padding of different
sizes assuring that whatever you're placing into the box
will fit securely.

I purchased the Aqua Box to mount my Xpress XM Radio in my
Yamaha Rhino and keep it out of the elements, ie. rain,
dust, etc.. I did a custom mounting of the Xpress base
inside the Aqua Box. It is a perfect fit. The flexible
clear face shield allows me to press the buttons on the
radio without having to open the box.
