I bought this item instead of RAP-B-231U (which appears
identical except for the screw) because I wanted a thumb
screw to make life easy. I should have just bought the
other item. What looks like a "thumb screw" in the picture
is actually a 7/64 allen head screw with a separate black
plastic cap that doesn't even fit in the screw head and was
completely worthless. Because of the standard RAM locking
nut, turning the screw by hand is hard. If you can get the
plastic cap to fit in the screw you're a better person than
me. I used a 7/64" allen wrench and it worked fine -- which
is likely what you need for the slightly cheaper part number
RAP-B-231U. So I'd say buy that instead. I tested this
mount with a mini-mag light and it did indeed hold it
securely once I got the screwing issue out of the way. My
mini-mag has a 1" diameter head. The description for this
item says it works with 3/4" to 1" diameter flashlights,
although I have to wonder just how tight it would hold a
3/4" light -- I had to skip using the spacer in order to get
it to hold my 1" diameter light a 3/4" would likely be
pushing the limits on the small side and the mount may not
hold it very tightly. I can't say for sure as I don't have
a 3/4" diameter rod or flashlight handy. Anyway, my goal was
to mount a flashlight to my bike handlebar, and this will
allow me to accomplish that goal. The screw fiasco is why
only 3 stars.
