A running app will not necessarily be able to make use of this device unless the Dual XGPS150A device itself is listed in the accessory list for the app in its own settings. There are a number of accessories you can use, but they must be listed to be able to use.
Using solely the phone GPS will give you version with scrambled data, lacking internet access, with no GPS data from the Dual unit.
If you are engaged in fitness activity in an area with cell phone coverage, then this GPS is unnecessary. However, it can make itself useful should running apps improve on their software and allow you to track your position on an already uploaded map in an area where you do not have cell phone coverage, say during travel in another country. You would ostensibly draw your map beforehand online from a base station and then let your phone do the recording through the GPS, only to upload later once you re-establish internet access.
As far as I know, this is not possible right now.
The GPS will fit inside an 'Armpocket', but you can also use the wrist band wrapped around the widest part of 'Armpocket' band. Once you have it tied down on your arm, it won't move from that location. It will only add negligible bulk to the 'Armpocket' once it's on your upper arm by attaching it outside the pocket with the wrist-band at the widest part of the 'Armpocket' arm strap.
I am wondering what kind of effect it will have swinging on the arm.

I was looking for a bluetooth GPS to add Wherigo support to myiPod as I didn't have that on either of my GPSrs (60CSx and 62s). This GPS seemed to fit the bill. It's perfect as it has an app for it which shows the position, the satellites and the battery level. Very nice features.
